Air Pollution -A Serious Issue- Do You Realize?

By Raveendran Nambyar

Article brought to you by Erie Construction Co

Pollution is a universal problem which is being discussed at length every where in the world. Air pollution causes damages to our health. We find it difficult to breathe when we are in city automobiles. At every traffic signal, the vehicles in front will supply us plenty of carbon dioxide, causing suffocation.

Carbon dioxide emissions are more, and increasing by the day, than a decade ago. Slowly and gradually it is warming the Earth. We are helping the process by cutting down trees. Deforestation has deprived the Earth of its best carbon dioxide absorbers. And doing this cruel act we create vast stretches of bare naked land which absorb heat happily. This is injustice to the next generation, our own children and grand children. Though aware of this fact, we continue to generate electricity from burning of fossil fuels. We are concerned about the economic factor, money in the pocket. We are worried about today. It will cost us more if and when we seek alternative means. The ideal clean energy power plants, such as hydroelectric, wind turbines, or solar power are expensive, now, to produce. When we announce boldly that we use less energy at home to reduce fossil fuel emissions, we are lying to ourselves, we are lying to our children, we are lying to our friends, and above all we are lying to our next generation, our grand children.

If you can afford it, buy a more fuel efficient vehicle. It is easy to say such things. May be we can’t afford it. But if we all pitch in, we can accomplish a lot, for the sake our children and grand children.

Green Choices and Consumption

By Michael Bloch

Article posted by Erie Construction Midwest

Going green isn’t just about the choices you make in purchasing - it’s about the level of consumption; even in relation to earth friendly products. Reducing consumption in all aspects of life will play a key role in averting a case of humanity acting like the proverbial lemmings.

Here’s a couple of examples.

Run my car on LPG? Great, that means I can travel further and it will only cost me the same!

Need more power? That’s fine, we’ll just build another zillion wind farms!

This is a common mentality for most of us; saving in order to spend. An essential part of living a more earth friendly life is about less consumption. Even the wonderful wind turbines have to be manufactured and that type of manufacturing is not earth friendly.

A few years ago, I would have been sitting in an office powered by several 100 watt globes, looking at a 17″ CRT screen while typing this out. Aside from the screen, the computer would have been drawing at least 100 watts too. So that’s a total of 300 watts of energy consumption an hour. My electricity would also most likely have been derived from the burning of coal.

Nowadays, my office is lit by a 10 watt compact fluorescent globe and I run a laptop with a smaller screen that draws at best 90 watts per hour. Over a day, I save about 2 kilowatts of power and what electricity I do use is sourced by renewable means or offset; and I suffer no real discomfort as a result.

Having less of an impact on the environment doesn’t mean we must live like cavemen or forego all of modern life’s luxuries, but just to treat them as such - luxuries; something to be cherished and used sparingly. It certainly boosts appreciation of these things and helps us to want for less.

But, in terms of energy consumption overall, with all these new fangled low voltage requirement gadgets coming out these days, energy star ratings to guide us and far more efficient engines etc, surely we must be using less energy per person?

No chance; most reports from countries around the world about energy usage state it’s increasing. There’s more people using more energy, despite a small offset as a result of improved energy efficiency.

Top 7 Tips For Speakers

By Sandra Schrift

Article reviewed by Choice Corporate Housing Inc

Do you get nervous when speaking to a group? Do you feel butterflies in your stomach? The following tips will help you get your butterflies to fly in formation.

1. Everyone feels some nerves before a presentation. Try to do a quiet meditation, visualization, or exercise before you speak. Breathe deeply. Memorize those opening linesand then quickly engage your audience with a question or humorous story.

2. Three keys to being a top presenter: practice, practice, practice. In front of your mirror, in front of your stuffed animals. Use a tape recorder and a cam recorder for playback and feedback. Try your material out with service clubs.

3. Embrace your audience. Remember, it is about them, not you. Are you going to challenge them to think differently, behave differently or perhaps, confirm them.

4. Use the rule of 3. The most successful speakers limit their remarks to 3 major points. Here is where you use your signature stories to support your points and help people visualize what you are saying.

5. Prepare for white space. Always allow for audience participation, questions, role play, interaction. These may be the moments that just occur and may not be part of your prepared text. Lots of practice will let you get comfortable enough to do this.

6. Use your props. Visual aids help to reinforce your points. Power Point provides professionalism. Toys create humor and playfulness. Adults delineate their thoughts visually…so be creative.

7. Leave a trail. Provide a handout or a flyer about other programs you offer and how people may contact you. Collect their business cards and raffle a prize. Ask for written feedback and for referrals.

How to Be a Great Speaker

By Sandra Schrift

Did you know that great speakers are often nervous with butterflies in their stomach before giving a presentation? And there are many actors/actresses who can not speak to live audiences without cue cards. My 13 years as a professional speakers bureau owner allowed me to hear several thousand speakers give their presentations. Here are a few tips I learned from them.

1. You want to be nervous. Get your butterflies to fly in formation. Some tension brings about a great speech. You usually don’t look as nervous as you feel. Be prepared, be relaxed. Practice, practice, practice. Use visualization techniques. One speaker suggests that you curl your toes and get rid of your adrenalin. Get out of your head and in to your heart. Reduce nervousness with self talk. Your mantra might be - “I am a relaxed, confident speaker.”

2. Great presentations are well organized.

Opening - You have 60seconds to get their attention. So start with a great question, quote or short story. Tell ‘em what you will tell them.

Body - Tell ‘em. This is where you tell your 3-4 points supported by your stories.

Closing -Tell ‘em what you told them. Give them a call to action. What is one idea they can use immediately? in seven days? in one month?
